For Our UK Customers

Once your shipment arrives UK/England you should have received the A “fee to pay” card will be left at the delivery address.

https://www.royalmail.com/personal/receiving-mail/pay-a-fee

A “fee to pay” card will be left at the delivery address when we cannot deliver an item of mail because there is not sufficient postage paid by the sender, or there is a customs fee to pay. The card will give you details of how much you will need to pay, and will state options of how you can do this (e.g. by return mail, or by going visiting http://www.royalmail.com/fee2pay).

If you have a fee to pay, it’s because of one of the following reasons: Your item has come from abroad so there’s a Customs charge to pay or not enough postage was paid for the item.

Don't worry - you'll still get your mail as we're holding it for you. All you need to do is pay the fee stated on the 'fee to pay' card that we sent to you. You can pay online, at your local delivery office, or by affixing stamps to your card and returning it to us. We will never call you and ask for payment over the phone.

When receiving goods by post for your personal use from outside the European Union (EU), you'll have to pay any tax and/or duty once the goods arrive in the UK. Normally Royal Mail/Parcelforce will pay what's due on your behalf and may charge a handling fee which you must pay before your parcel can be delivered.

Royal Mail/Parcelforce Handling Fees - If duty and/or tax is payable, Royal Mail/Parcelforce will pay this to HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) on your behalf, and charge a handling fee to cover:

- operating the postal customs depot
- handling the package for customs examination
- opening, repacking and resealing the package if required
- paying the charges to HMRC on your behalf

Note that if there is no duty and/or tax to pay, you won't be charged a handling fee.

They'll write to you letting you know how much you need to pay, and the available payment methods. The customs charges and handling fee are itemized separately on the charge label.

If you have any queries about the handling fee you should raise these directly with Royal Mail/Parcelforce - these charges are entirely separate from any tax and/or duty charges, and the UK Border Agency (UKBA) and HMRC have no control on the charges it makes.

If you have any queries about the customs charges you should contact the UKBA - see next section.

Once payment has been received, you'll be able to request delivery of your package, or pick it up from your local delivery office.

Receiving Mail From Abroad - All mail that enters the United Kingdom may be examined by customs, but normally letters, postcards and packets containing only documents or similar forms of correspondence are excluded.

If you are receiving a package from overseas (unless it’s from another EU Country), please be aware that it may incur customs charges. Any package assessed by HM Revenue and customs as being liable for customs charges will also incur a Royal Mail handling fee of £8.

Any goods imported into the UK over the value of £18 are liable to import VAT. Gifts between private individuals over the value of £40 are also liable for VAT. Goods and gifts over these values may also be liable for customs duty. You no longer have to pay customs duty for goods up to the value of £135, however you will still be required to pay import VAT and excise duty where applicable.

Please note that these limits do not apply to alcohol and tobacco goods where both excise duty and import VAT may be charged. It is not permitted to send alcohol and tobacco products into the UK from another EU country unless prior arrangements have been made to account for the excise duty.

For more details please read the Royal Mail guide to receiving goods from overseas. You can also check the HM Revenue & Customs guide to Shopping (new window) on the Internet.

Customs Declarations – CN22 - For gifts and goods up to £270 in value you'll need complete one of these:
