Liberty Head $20 (1849-1907)

The 1850-O boasts a substantial mintage of the New Orleans Mint of 141,000 pieces and is one of the few readily collectible dates in the series from this mint. Nonetheless, the issue is scarce in attractive AU condition and is prohibitively rare with a Mint State designation. Numismatic interest in large denomination gold -- particularly branch mint coinage -- was essentially nonexistent in the 1850s. The 1850-O twenty, like all gold coinage from the Southern mints in that era, was issued as a commercial workhorse. Most surviving examples are well-worn, abraded, impaired, or worse.

The NGC population is 64 with 34 graded higher.

Listed at $20,000 in the CDN CPG and $22,500 in the NGC price guide.

1851-O $20 Liberty AU58 NGC

1861 $20 Liberty MS63 PCGS

The 1861 Twenty is by far the most heavily produced Type One issue and for many years (before the S.S. Central America coins were retrieved and offered to the public) it was also the most available early date Double Eagle in Uncirculated grades. Unlike the hoard coins, most Mint State examples of this issue show abundant abrasions and rarely surpass the MS62 grade level. This extraordinary representative is notable not only for its pinpoint sharpness and vibrant luster, but also for its lack of surface marks. An important offering for the quality conscious Civil War gold collector.
