One reason for the low mintage of the 1889-CC dollar, other than the millions of San Francisco Mint dollars already stored unwanted in Treasury vaults, was that the Carson City Mint closed in 1885, and did not reopen until 1889. Silver dollars were struck there for only part of the year. These subsequently circulated extensively, and many survivors are now in VF and lower grades. XF and AU examples are scarce, and in extremely high demand from collectors. Uncirculated 1889-CC dollars are very rare by the standards of the series, with the great majority of these in bagmarked, lower-end Uncirculated grades. At the Select level, however, this issue is highly elusive.
The present piece is well struck and has nice luster as the coin is viewed at different angles. The unusually clean surfaces easily confirm the quality implied by its grade, and both sides exhibit subdued white fields and fully brilliant appearance. This impressive key date Morgan dollar will be the centerpiece of any high grade collection. PCGS Population: 126 in 63, 47 finer.
