1908 NM $20 St Gaudens MS68 NGC

The 1908 No Motto double eagles from the famous Wells Fargo Hoard represent the best opportunity to obtain a Saint-Gaudens double eagle in MS68 condition. Such coins are scarce, but obtainable with some patience. This example displays mint luster with warm orange-gold and a sharp, bold strike. Frosty luster reveals only one or two faint signs of contact when studied beneath a loupe, while the unaided eye easily could be convinced that this coin is essentially flawless. In all aspects this is an outstanding type coin with high-level eye appeal equal to its exceptional technical merit. The coin is tied for finest at NGC.

The Wells Fargo Hoard consists of nearly 10,000 pristine, uncirculated 1908 No Motto $20 Saint-Gaudens Double Eagle gold coins. Sealed in bank bags in 1917 and discovered in the early 1990s in a Nevada vault, these coins are prized by collectors for their exceptional, untouched luster. The discovery of this hoard dramatically increased the availability of gem-quality 1908 Double Eagles. Because the coins were locked away, they completely escaped the widespread melting of gold coins ordered during the 1933 Gold Surrender Only 144 coins have been certified as MS68 grade at NGC.
