1836 Gold Dollar Pattern PF65 NGC J-67
Park Avenue Numismatics Inventory Item # PAN2116
Judd-67. This is the first Gold Dollar pattern struck in anticipation for a future coinage. One of the few gold patterns actually struck in gold. Extremely rare. Designed by Christian Gobrecht. This is a remarkable example that ought to be collected along with other important Gold Dollars.
The obverse features a Liberty cap surrounded by rays of glory, similar in design to certain contemporary Mexican issues. The reverse features the denomination 1 D. within a coiled palm frond, with the date below and UNITED STATES OF AMERICA above. Christian Gobrecht is credited with both designs. Struck in gold with a plain edge.
Commentary. Judd-67 is the first gold dollar pattern struck in anticipation of a future coinage. It is also one of the few gold patterns, actually struck in gold, that can be obtained at a somewhat reasonable price. The cataloger for Stack’s in 2003 noted the blundered reverse die, with the C in AMERICA first punched horizontally, with its opening toward the border, and then corrected. The observation provides clear evidence that the dies (or a hub) were created through the use of individual letter punches.
Both originals and restrikes exist for Judd-67, with at least one overstruck example known on an 1859 gold dollar as its host. That piece is clearly visible at USPatterns.com.
